Behold, I Come Quickly

As a thief in the night.
An image to instruct
Impress the urgency
To prepare and repent.

Activity alone
Quietly living laws
Of righteousness each day
Brings no guarantee of time.

Our narrow mortal plans
Of celestial marriage
Guiding children through youth
‘Til the grandchildren come.

Of long years together
Retirement, mission
Lamps full of oil, prepared
To endure to the end.

The end may not come late.
Beginnings are just that.
And mortal time tables
Are sadly incomplete.

Perhaps not His coming
But our going home
Is what comes as a thief
In the night of man’s time.

Our years are not numbered
Not measured as we wish
But according to plan
By the Author Himself.

Not just ingratitude
But our own reckoning
Of our plans as God’s
Are our common mistakes.

We are not promised life
Without measure on earth.
We are promised our turn
To prepare for that life

Without bounds, without time
Complete and whole at last
In His time, in His way.
Behold, He comes quickly.
