Christmas Morning
The adult in me prefers
To meet the day
When the sun has risen.
Mum couldn’t wait
To make and share
All those things
That mean Christmas to us.
It’s been many decades now
Since the child in me
Also woke well before dawn.
I’m not as eager
For giving and receiving presents,
Seeing festive displays
And joining in Rocking Around the Christmas Tree.
I cherish the love
The caring
The good will and Christmas hymns.
Most of all
My heart joins with those
Who rejoice and worship
And celebrate all that is Christ.
Perhaps the decades
Have matured my heart
My mind and my vision.
Perhaps not.
Maybe the joys
And delights of Christmas Day
Aren’t so much in the past.
Looking forward to the sun rising soon.
