Spoken to My Heart
A book was placed in my hands
And my mind and heart awoke.
This is scripture, this is true.
This is how you will live your life.
And from that day
I have read that book
And taught from that book
Scores of times.
When I read the scriptures
My heart automatically opens.
But so many times the teachings flow
Without my asking.
Discernment was a gift to me,
Testimony, too.
Answers to prayers many times
Came before I even asked.
Yet I have been taught
That understanding is not complete
Until the heart is not only open
But applied to understanding.
It took me far too long
To realize the importance of planning,
Of asking the right questions
Before study, before worship.
Bring your questions
To study times
To sacraments
To conferences.
So much more understanding
Is received when the mind is ready
When the heart is open
When the heart specifically seeks.
A loving Father in heaven
Gave words of comfort
Gave words of instruction
Gave words of warning.
And He has given His words
To all of His children.
We share in the knowledge
Given to those who asked.
And when our hearts are open
When we apply the depth of our feelings
The Holy Ghost gives us discernment
Gives us testimony.
And when we prepare
With real intent and love
We will be ready
When truth speaks to our hearts.
